NEW YORK (March 31, 2016) — Human Rights Foundation (HRF) strongly condemns the continued harassment and surveillance of Cuban graffiti artist and activist Danilo Maldonado Machado, also known as El Sexto, by Cuban state security agents. El Sexto has been detained three times and held for three to five hours each time since his return to Cuba earlier this month. In every instance he was violently subdued and then arrested while taking part in peaceful, pro-democracy demonstrations in Cuba. Hundreds of activists have been arrested in the last month for demonstrating against the government before and during President Obama’s visit to Cuba.More

NEW YORK (October 30, 2015) — The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) welcomes the release of Cuban graffiti artist and activist Danilo Maldonado Machado, best known as El Sexto, and urges the Cuban state to end the ongoing harassment and court case against him. In December, Maldonado was arbitrarily arrested and accused of criminal defamation for “insulting” the leaders of the Cuban revolution. Though he was never formally charged, he spent almost 10 months in jail. Last Sunday, Maldonado was detained again while marching with the Ladies in White on their traditional Sunday walk that calls for freedom and democracy in Cuba. Maldonado was handcuffed and taken back to his house in a police car to prevent his participation in the peaceful march.More
